How you do anything is how you do everything…

Last week, I facilitated a two-day leadership retreat, and one of the phrases I used frequently was, “How you do anything is how you do everything.”

This phrase was made popular by Martha Beck and refers to your mindset or your approach to life.

I use it often because it raises awareness about our thoughts and beliefs, which are often unconscious yet greatly influence how we behave both in and outside of the workplace.

Mindsets are created by our experiences, which means they are inherently full of blind spots and can be self-deceptive. This can often lead to confirmation bias, the searching for and recalling of information that reconfirms our pre-existing beliefs.

Unconscious mindsets are one reason we have professional development around implicit bias and why I focus on them when discussing personal leadership.

Examining our mindsets creates opportunities for new ways of seeing and, therefore, new ways of “being.”

So, what personal mindsets do highly effective teams have?

  • Clear vision

  • Courage

  • Commitment

  • Integrity

  • Emotional intelligence

  • Cultural Humility

  • Community Minded

  • Risk-taking

Stay with me as I describe each mindset and how it impacts the workplace. I will also provide practical questions and actionable tips for cultivating these mindsets in yourself and your staff.
