Success leaves clues!
Before we delve into learning from our mistakes or failing forward, let's take a moment to celebrate our successes from last year. This reflection is not just a trip down memory lane, but a powerful tool to empower us for the journey ahead.
While we might not consider our actions successes, this is my first challenge of the year for you!
Take 5 minutes to jot down all the things you succeeded in doing last year. Remember, success comes in all sizes, from the monumental, like a promotion, to the seemingly mundane, like finding a quicker route to work. Each one is a testament to your capabilities and deserves recognition.
However, I also want you to think about those small successes that happen on a daily basis. For example, finding a new route to work that cuts down on traffic, gets you to work faster, and in a more relaxed manner. So why would you consider these as successes?
Because success leaves clues!!
Even when we're thinking about the small things we do every day, we often don't take the time to reflect on why they're successful. For example, what did we do that made it successful? Better yet, who did we need to "BE" for that something to succeed?
By reflecting on our successes and answering questions like those posed above, we start to uncover 'clues' that can guide us to success in other areas. This process equips us with the knowledge and confidence to tackle future challenges head-on.
For example, when finding that new route to work, you might have experimented with a few different routes with a few different turns or alternative streets until you found one that worked perfectly for early morning traffic. The key here is that you experimented, tried some other things, stuck with it, or were persistent until you found something that worked for you. So, if you reflect on this moment, what you did was experiment. And who you were being was persistent.
Where else can you persist in experimenting and trying new things? Is something happening at work that's a consistent challenge that you could apply your experimentation strategy to, along with being persistent until you get to something that is working a little better than it has in the past?
I know this is a lot to think about. Yet, reflecting on our successes is a great strategy for moving forward personally and professionally. Remember, reflecting on successes is a hallmark of highly effective teams. So, if you are a supervisor or a coach, this is a great strategy for helping your teams move forward as well.
