Don’t Skip the Gratitude — The Role of Appreciation in Retention
How do you show appreciation in ways that feel authentic and consistent?
Appreciation isn’t a bonus—it’s a strategy. When people feel seen and valued, they’re more likely to stay, grow, and contribute. And yet, appreciation is often the first thing to fall away in the busy pace of a new school year.
For new staff, appreciation matters even more. A simple "thank you," a handwritten note, or a public acknowledgment can ease anxiety, affirm belonging, and reinforce that their work matters.
Embed appreciation into your onboarding by:
Celebrating firsts (first week, first newsletter, first team meeting!)
Creating space for gratitude in staff meetings
Modeling peer-to-peer recognition
Acknowledging effort, not just outcomes
Strategies to Try:
Create a staff appreciation board for public shout-outs and notes.
Build in weekly gratitude moments at staff check-ins.
Send handwritten notes to new staff at the end of their first month.
